MediaTek Announces Helio P70 Flagship SoC with AI Engine

Mobile phone chipset maker MediaTek has announced the all-new Helio P70 system-on-chip (SoC) with enhanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) engine designed to power full-featured smartphones at affordable price points. Unlike this year’s Kirin, Snapdragon and Apple A-series chipsets, the P70 is built on a 12nm process, and not on 7nm process, which improves power efficiency and performance significantly.

The Helio P70 chipset comes with CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) upgrades for more powerful AI processing, and also brings upgraded imaging and camera support, a gaming performance boost and advanced connectivity features, MediaTek said in a statement.

Built with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSM) 12nm FinFET technology, the Helio P70 features a multi-core APU operating at up to 525 MHz (megahertz) for fast and efficient edge-AI processing. The chipset packs four Arm Cortex-A73 2.1 GHz (gigahertz) processors and four Arm Cortex-A53 2.0 GHz processors in an octa-core big.LITTLE configuration.
For an additional power boost, the chipset has an improved Arm Mali-G72 MP3 GPU operating at up to 900 MHz, which provides a 13 percent performance improvement compared to the Helio P60, MediaTek said.
Helio P70’s enhanced AI engine delivers a 10 to 30 percent AI processing boost compared to the Helio P60, the company added.

The chipset is built on MediaTek’s NeuroPilot platform, the company’s hardware and software ecosystem to support edge-AI. NeuroPilot supports common AI frameworks, including TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe, Caffe2 and custom third party offerings. Helio P70 comes with a 4G LTE modem and 300MBit/s (megabit per second) of download performance.
With an enhanced AI engine that works seamlessly across the CPU and GPU, Helio P70 delivers much faster performance for AI applications and is still highly power efficient,” said TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit.
“The introduction of Helio P70 continues MediaTek’s commitment to deliver high-end smartphone features and advanced technology for the mass market,” Lee said.
The introduction of the Helio P70 follows the launch of the Helio P60 earlier this year, and builds on its hallmark features to power the full-featured smartphones.

What to Expect from Apple’s Rumoured Macbook Air Refresh at October 30 Event

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the latest in tech, you’d know that Apple has scheduled a launch event for October 30 in Brooklyn, New York. Though the invite simply hints at the arrival of a new iPad, along with an upgraded Apple Pencil 2, the Cupertino giant is long-rumored to unveil fresh new MacBooks and a modular Mac Pro as well.

The most-anticipated among all the expected launches is obviously the MacBook Air, that hasn’t received any love from Apple for a really long time. It still dons the same-old build with massive bezels, age-old processors, and the iconic keyboard, which many might prefer over the newer keyboards.
Needless to say, the MacBook Air deserves some much-needed attention and here’s what you can expect from its speculated October 30 launch:

Latest Internals

The biggest upgrade for the new MacBook Air, also the most important one, would be the CPU. The aging MacBook Air is powered by three-year-old 5th-gen Intel Core processors and it’s disheartening to seein 2018.

While there has been a myriad of rumors about MacBook Air’s internal refresh in the past few months, there’s still no concrete evidence of what Apple would ultimately settle with. The rumor mill has suggested an upgrade to 8th-gen Intel Core processors and it does look like the most plausible option.
Intel has a bouquet of 8th-gen processors that should be fitting for use in the speculated MacBook Air upgrade, including the Kaby Lake refresh (Kaby Lake-R), Whiskey Lake, and Amber Lake processors. The most suitable of the lot, however, is believed to be their U-series Whiskey Lake processors that offer 2 times better performance and double-digit gains in office productivity as compared to a 5-year old PC.

Retina Display

As reported by multiple sources in the past, Apple will finally add a Retina display to its upcoming MacBook Air to bring it up to par with the rest of the MacBook lineup.
The existing MacBook Air, which is three-years too old now, just has a display resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels, but it could be bumped up to the same resolution as MacBook Pro’s OLED display(2560×1600 pixels) soon. The LCD panel is rumored to be made by LG.

This would be a significant upgrade for MacBook Air, which has the most outdated screen on any Apple product right now.

Design Upgrade

Apart from powerful internals and a gorgeous Retina display, Apple is also expected to cut down on bezels, as well as change the ports with the MacBook Air refresh.

Almost every PC maker has trimmed out the bezels from the display this year, and Apple also did so with the MacBook Pro announced this year. The 13-inch MacBook Air has huge outdated bezels, well, because it’s from late 2010 and the design worked until it did.
As for the ports, Apple could stick with its guns and make a complete transition to USB-C on the MacBook Air as well. This means you can expect to get sucked into the dongle life (which is an added expense) even if you decide to spend less and get a MacBook Air.

You’ll also have to leave behind the old-style chick-let keyboard and learn to adapt to the butterfly keyboard, with less key travel and noise. And finally, we can expect Apple to add some color to its new cheaper laptops and unveil Space Gray, Gold, and Rose Gold color options, alongside the silver one.

No Touch Bar

And obviously, if you have been expecting the Touch Bar to make its way down from the MacBook Pro to the forthcoming MacBook Air lineup, you’re probably going to be disappointed.
Apple’s Touch Bar looks great and has plenty of features, but it hasn’t received much love from users or developers.
TOUCH BAR FEELS LIKE A GIMMICK AT THIS POINT

Apple is said to be planning a cheaper MacBook Air this time around, and the Touch Bar would be an added expense. Apple could add Touch ID (with the T2 security chip) in the power button to improve the security of its new MacBook Air, which would be exactly what many fans want.

Retina MacBook!?

Though the MacBook Air is certainly the one we’d like to receive a refresh at the October 30th event, we wouldn’t want the existing 12-inch MacBook, with a Retina display, to be left behind either. We expect Apple to upgrade the internals, further trim the bezels and bring a new fanless build to this MacBook but without a big price bump.
Finally, if you’re wondering how Apple is going to price the cheaper MacBook Air laptops, well, the rumor mill is insistent on the fact that at least one of the configurations will be available for $999 or less (around Rs. 1 lakh, including customs duty+taxes).

The Black Shark Helo also features an X+1 antenna for better network reception and retains the dedicated Black Shark button to activate the gaming mode. While BlackShark will soon be going global, there’s no word on when the Helo will hit markets outside China.

Huawei Says Other Manufacturers Can Freely Use Nano Memory Card Design

A few days back, Huawei dropped a surprise announcement about their invention of Nano Memory (NM) cards, a new type of expandable storage supported by the new Mate seriessmartphones.
It may seem daunting at first, but Huawei truly believes that Nano Memory is going to become a global standard. Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu recently told GSMArena in an interview that the company plans to make this a standard by helping storage card manufacturers and device makers.
Nano Memory Card slot as shown on-stage

Yu was very optimistic about the future of nano memory. According to him, the invention of nano memory, just like Huawei’s invention of the double-sided Dual SIM slot and the hybrid SIM slot, will become an industry standard in the future.
Huawei also appears to be very generous when it comes to licensing. Yu noted that they are willing to work with anyone in the industry to make nano memory cards readily available to the consumers when they are ready for the transition from micro SD cards. In fact, the patent is open for all manufacturers to use freely.
Richard also noted that they have adapters for nano memory cards which can be used to plug them into our computers.
“Huawei holds the patent for nano memory, but it’s open for all manufacturers to use freely.”

What does it mean?

As of now, Huawei is the only company that’s making the nano memory cards for its Mate series smartphones. And unless other manufacturers adopt this standard, it seems like Huawei will remain the only one to do it.
Well, this brings us back to the same question that we had previously – Is this the future for external phone storage? Honestly, it is still very early to pass a judgment. Yes, it is hard not to acknowledge Huawei’s optimistic approach and its efforts to make nano memory an industry standard. But only time will tell if other manufacturers will be willing to flip the switch on nano memory. That being said, working with other manufacturers and allowing everyone in the industry to manufacture this memory is certainly a good start.
