LG Plans Foldable Smartphone; Registers Brand Names in Europe

After Samsung, its South Korean rival LG has now hinted at launching a foldable smartphone, the media reported.

The smartphone maker has applied for three brand name registrations — Flex, Foldi and Duplex — at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

“All three applications are categorised in Class 9 that includes smartphones, so it’s a pretty safe bet that LG is claiming these names for any future devices it makes, foldable or otherwise,” Engadget reported.
However, it was not clear if the names would be used for a smartphone or any other device. “The first two, ‘Flex’ and ‘Foldi’, are pretty straightforward and in sync with Samsung’s Galaxy F and Huawei’s Flexi/Flex trademarks.
                                    Samsung Infinity Flex display

‘Duplex’, on the other hand, is an interesting choice by LG, especially considering that Google is using the word for its AI call-making feature that just started rolling out to users. However, that’s just the name for the underlying technology and Google is marketing it as Call Screen in the Google Pixel Phones.
It remains to be seen how far developed LG’s foldable screen technology is. There’s no word yet on when the LG pone will be launched. Samsung aims to launch its first foldable smartphone in March next year, along with a fifth-generation (5G) network-powered Galaxy S10.
The South Korean tech giant plans to unveil the flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone in February, followed by the foldable Galaxy F and another edition of the Galaxy S10 that runs on the 5G network in March.

Realme U1 to be Launched on November 28: Everything We Know So Far

Realme is all set to launch a new smartphone, the Realme U1, in India at an event called the Realme Gala on November 28. The company’s hype campaign for the upcoming smartphone is in full swing right now and is teasing the Realme U1 as India’s Selfie Pro. We’ll have to see how true that is, but before the device is officially announced, here’s what we know about the Realme U1:

Realme U1: Everything We Know So Far

MediaTek Helio P70 SoC

Soon after MediaTek unveiled the Helio P70 SoC, Realme announced that the company will soon launch the world’s first smartphone powered by the new MediaTek SoC. Earlier this month, Realme confirmed that the company’s next smartphone will be the Realme U1 that will have the Helio P70 ticking at its heart.

                                       mage courtesy: SmartPrix
Earlier today, a Realme device claimed to be the Realme U1 was benchmarked alongside the Redmi Note 6 Pro the and Honor 8X, and an image of the three smartphones sitting side by side was also leaked. In the AnTuTu benchmark, the Realme U1 managed to beat the Redmi Note 6 Pro the and Honor 8X with a score of 145,021 points, while the Xiaomi and Honor device lagged behind with 115,611 and 139,974 points respectively.
From the benchmark scores, it is clear that the Helio P70 is a better performer than the Kirin 710 powering the Honor 8X and the Snapdragon 636 ticking inside the Redmi Note 6 Pro.

Dewdrop Notch

Talking about the Realme U1’s design, a promotional poster for the upcoming smartphone makes it abundantly clear that the Realme U1 will sport a dewdrop notch and will be the company’s second device after the Realme 2 Pro to flaunt one.

Design

The device was recently spotted in the hands of Realme CEO Madhav Sheth, giving us a glimpse at the Realme U1’s design from the back. The Realme U1 has an uncanny resemblance to the Realme 2 Pro’s rear panel, down to the glossy surface finish, placement of the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor as well as the horizontally stacked dual rear-camera set-up. The Realme U1 shown in the picture has a golden tone to it, which is yet to be seen on a Realme smartphone.

Camera

The Realme U1 is being marketed as India’s Selfie Pro, which suggests that the device will pack a capable imaging hardware on the front, letting users capture some high-quality selfies. The company, as well as its CEO, have shared a couple of images clicked using the Realme U1 which look quite vibrant, but we’ll have to wait and put it through our camera test to find out how good it actually is.

There is no information about the resolution of the Realme U1’s cameras, but a tweet from Realme suggests that the device will come with AI beautification feature onboard that will utilize 296 facial recognition points to enhance selfies.
That’s all we know about the Realme U1 at the moment, however, there is no word on the device’s estimated pricing and availability, aside from the fact that it will be an Amazon-exclusive deviceThe Realme U1’s launch event will kick off at 12:30 PM on November 28 and will also be live-streamed on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter as well as the company’s official website.

Oppo R-Series is Coming to India

Today seems to be an exciting day for Oppo. After its sister company Realme announced this morning that it’ll be launching the budget Realme U1 in India later this month, Oppo has now teased the arrival of its coveted R-series in the country.

In an official tweet sent out by Oppo Mobile India, the company has attached a video with the silhouette of a new smartphone and the letter “R” in front of it. The tweet also carries the caption ‘Stay tuned! Something new is coming up. #OPPO R-Series.’
Twitter Ads info and privWhile we do get to see a silhouette, the Chinese giant hasn’t doled out any hints for what device it’ll be launching in India. We expect it to be the Oppo R17 series, where the Neo variant could be a great addition to the company’s mid-range portfolio in India

Oppo R17 Neo

Talking about the R17 Neo first, the device sports a 6.4-inch Full-HD+(2340×1080 pixels, 19.5:9 aspect ratio) AMOLED display with the modern waterdrop notch. It is powered by the Snapdragon 660 chipset, paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

If you think it’s a flagship, well, then you’re mistaken because it’s powered by the Snapdragon 710 chipset. It is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

As for the optics department, this is where the R17 Pro gets super interesting. It includes a triple rear-camera setup with a 12MP + 20MP + TOF 3D stereo camera, offering an aperture of F1.5/F2.4+F2.6. There’s a 25MP selfie camera on board here as well.

What To Expect From Nokia’s December 5 Dubai Event

HMD Global may have already launched a whole lot of smartphones in 2018, but the Finnish company is now looking to end the year with a bang. It has now scheduled a launch event in Dubai for December 5 and the invite hints at the arrival of three Nokia smartphones!
Juho Sarvikas, the Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, shared the press invite for the Dubai event with the caption #ExpectMore, hinting at the arrival of something unexpected. The caption could not only hint at the launch of a powerful budget phone but also a captivating flagship.
If you are wondering what the three devices could be, well, here’s everything we expect from the Dubai launch event:

Nokia 7.1 Plus / Nokia 8.1 (aka Nokia X7)

HMD launched the much-awaited successor to the Nokia 7 Plus, the Nokia X7 in China earlier last month and it may now be ready to go global. The device sports a 6.18-inch FHD+ (18.7:9) screen, with a notch, and is powered by the Snapdragon 710 SoC, coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.

As for the optics, you get a dual-rear camera system with a primary 12MP (with OIS) sensor and a 13MP secondary sensor. There’s also a 20MP selfie camera on board. It includes a 3,500mAh battery and runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.
The naming of the global variant of this device is still unknown. If you go by HMD’s past naming, it should be called the Nokia 7.1 Plus but the rumor mill says it would debut as the Nokia 8.1.

Nokia 2.1 Plus

The company has already refreshed each model in its lineup this year, from the Nokia 6.1 Plus to Nokia 3.1 Plus, so we can also expect HMD to take the wraps off Nokia 2.1 Plus in Dubai.
As per a recent sighting at the FCC, Nokia 2.1 Plus (model number TA–1136) is expected to come with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. It’s the only detail revealed by this listing, but since it will be a “Plus” variant, we can expect a bigger display and bigger battery for entry-level users as well. It could very well launch with Android Go Pie Edition, given the low RAM.

Nokia 9

And finally, Nokia’s gambit with the Nokia 8 Sirocco didn’t really pay off and the company is still looking to break into the premium segment. This is where the much-rumored and talked-about Nokia 9 comes into the picture.

This is much rumored penta-camera phone that the company could probably unveil during its event in Dubai. It’s expected to come with a 5.9-inch QHD+ display and powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset, but the highlight will obviously be the five cameras on the rear. There’s nothing concrete on what design Nokia will use for the rear cameras, but alleged leaks show a circular setup.

Nokia’s December 5 Launch Event

Three devices will be going official in Dubai next month, and we can expect HMD to bring them to India soon too, given the company’s success here. We’ll be bringing you all the updates, so best stay tuned to Cue Sparks. So, are you excited for Nokia’s upcoming smartphones? What are your expectations for the launch event? Let us know and tell us what you think about 5 cameras on a phone.
