Prime Minister Narendra Modi turns 69 on Tuesday and he has reached Ahmedabad to start the day with his mother. PM Modi arrived in Gujarat on Monday night and was received by a host of supporters and chief minister Vijay Rupani.

PM Modi was greeted by a large number of supporters at the airport who were waiting to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister.

The puja will be part of the Namami Devi Narmada Mahotsav which is being organised by the Vijay Rupani government to mark the rise of water levels --138.68 metres -- in the Sardar Sarovar dam.

PM Modi had inaugurated the Sardar Sarovar dam project on September 17, 2017, but due to lack of rainfall, water levels remained low. This time, due to massive rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, water levels rose in Narmada river as a result of which this dam too reached its maximum capacity.

Sardar Sarovar is India's largest dam and second largest in the world. This project will cater to power and water needs of four states - Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Sardar Sarovar dam is known as the lifeline of Gujarat because its water can be accessed by even the last village in Kutch district. Water from this dam is made accessible to 131 towns and cities and 9,633 villages in Gujarat through 457 canals spanning 75,000 kilometres.

The dam in full capacity can irrigate 18 lakh hectares of agricultural land. It can also supply drinking water all over the state in the next two years.
